Sarah Manske is a third year PhD student in Biomedical Engineering (Home Department: Kinesiology) at the University of Calgary. She is co-supervised by Dr. Steven Boyd and Dr. Ron Zernicke. She completed her BSc (Kinesiology) at Simon Fraser University. She completed herMSc (Experimental Medicine) at the University of British Columbia under the supervision of Dr. Heather McKay, where she worked on a project to measure cortical bone in the human femoral neck with MRI, and the association of those measurements with proximal femur failure strength. Her PhD thesis is focusing on the effects of muscle on bone, and the potential role of low magnitude, high frequency vibration on maintenance of bone strength and architecture. She is using Botox as a model to study the effects of muscle disuse in the mouse skeleton. She hopes to apply high frequency vibration to determine whether high frequency vibration can be used to maintain bone during muscle disuse. Outside the lab, Sarah competes in long distance triathlons, and enjoys other outdoor activities such as cross-country skiing and hiking.
