Olesja was born in Tschu, Kazakhstan. When she was nine years old, her family moved to Germany. In 2010 she obtained her Bachelor of Science Degree in Bio- and Process-Engineering at the Hochschule Furtwangen University, Germany. During her undergraduate study, Olesja spent 10 months studying and doing research at the University of Calgary. She was involved in a research internship where she studied embryonic stem cells responses to various biochemical and fluid dynamic environments in a parallel-plate flow chamber in the laboratories of Dr. Derrick Rancourt and Dr. Kristina Rinker. Deeply impressed by the quality of the research facilities at the University of Calgary, she officially joined the CIHR-SRMT to complete her Undergraduate Thesis Project. She developed devices for loading gels seeded with embryonic stem cells and a mouse tibia-femur joint seeded with the cell-gel constructs under supervision of Dr. Neil Duncan. In May 2010, she started her Master's program in Biomedical Engineering. She continues to explore the biomechanical impact on stem cells differentiation and fracture healing. She holds a Nanotechnology award to study the release of growth factors using nanocarrier into the cell-gel constructs. Despite research she likes squash, fishing, and exploring North America.
