Katharina Schnackenburg was born in Bremen, Germany where she also finished her undergraduate degree in 2008 in Biomimetic Engineering, a world-wide unique program at the University of Applied Sciences that looks at nature to find inspiration for the solution to engineering problems. In the course of this program, Katharina spent 5 months at Carleton University in Ottawa in 2006 working on a project concerning the aerodynamic interaction of locust fore- and hindwings. She did her Bachelor thesis work with the title “Aerodynamic Performance of Biologically Inspired Wing Designs towards Micro Air Vehicle development” in cooperation with the NRC Canada at Carleton University in the summer of 2007. After having finished her degree, Katharina then worked at the bioceramics institute of the University of Bremen until she started a Master’s in Biomedical Engineering with Dr. Steven Boyd at the University of Calgary in September 2008. Her research interests are in the area of bone mechanics and she is focusing on the role of bone micro-architecture in stress fracture occurrence in runners.
In her free time, Katharina likes to do international latin dance, which she did competitively in a latin dance formation and as a single couple for several years in Germany.
