Dr. Guoliang Meng was born in China in 1965. He has a BS in biology from Central China Normal University, MSc and Ph.D in genetics and cell biology from Peking University. As early as 1990, as a master candidate in Peking University in China, he was trained to do his favorite research work including establishment and characterization of mouse embryonic stem cell lines and production of knockout mice. From then on, he had derived and characterized about 70 mouse ES cell lines form 7 different mouse strains and isolated rabbit, bovine and porcine ES-like colonies. In 2000, he began to try to isolate human embryonic stem cells from human blastocyst stage embryos. For the first time in China, he isolated human ES cells from 2 embryos and passaged to six generations. From 2003 to date, he has been a postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Derrick Rancourt lab.  At present, his interesting research work focuses on (1) Derivation of human embryonic stem cell lines in xeno-free, chemically defined conditions; (2) Differentiation of hESCs into several specific cell types, such as cardiomyocytes and mesenchymal stem cells. From 1992 to 2008, Dr. Meng have been awarded 9 items for his outstanding research work, such as S and T achievement award (China)and CIHR Training Program award (Canada).
