Charlie Hsu was born in Taiwan; his family immigrated to Canada in 1992 when he was 10. After completing high school in Vancouver, BC, he moved out to Edmonton to study at the University of Alberta where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in molecular genetics. During his undergraduate career, Hsu had completed a 16-month industrial internship program at the Alberta Research Council in Vegreville where his project utilized recombinant DNA technology and tissue culture technique to generate transgenic plants. The work experience sparked his interest in regenerative biology and led him to pursue further education in research. His eventual goal is to conduct clinical research in experimental medicine. Outside the lab, Hsu rows competitively for the Edmonton Rowing Club and also volunteers as a board of director, managing various administrative and logistical duties for the club. He also continues to craft his skills in graphics design and website development, taking on various projects through the organizations that he is involved with. Hsu also has an immense passion for food, enjoys exploring the art of culinary science and cooks frequently to satisfy his compulsive hunger.
