Arthur Sampaio was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Shortly after high school, he moved to Canada and joined the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, where he obtained an Honours Bachelor of Science degree in Cell Biology. Pursuing his academic endeavours at the same university, he joined the Department of Zoology and obtained a Master of Science degree studying the role of apoptosis in the molecular mechanism of sexual maturation of hermaphroditic tapeworm parasites under the supervision of Dr. Ron Podesta. He then joined the laboratory of Dr. Michael Underhill, a member of the SRMT, where he obtained his Doctor of Philosophy degree studying the role of Vitamin A and D in osteogenesis. As a graduate student, Arthur received several prestigious scholarships and awards including the Ontario Graduate Scholarship, the Ontario Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Doctoral Research Award, the Canadian Arthritis Network Scholarship, and ranked 1st place in Canada during the Senior Pre-doctoral Hatton CADR Award competition, among others. After his PhD, Arthur remained in Dr. Michael Underhill’s laboratory where he currently holds a Research Associate position at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.
